The best comfort food in London to try this winter

Winter is coming, so we’ve rounded up the best spots in London that serve the cosiest, most indulgent comfort food. You can thank us later!

1. Ramen at Bone Daddies, Soho

Nothing screams ‘winter warmer’ like slurping up a steaming hot bowl of noodles served with roast pork and a variety of delicious toppings. We like Bone Daddies for its quirky range of flavours – Chicken Katsu Curry Ramen, anyone?

2. Fried chicken at Chick’n’Sours, Dalston and Covent Garden

Fried chicken is a staple comfort food for a reason. Here, the gourmet fried chicken is served with a range of inventive sides – it’s so good that you’ll think twice before stumbling into the nearest Chicken Cottage after a messy night out. On Sundays, you can even have a whole fried chicken!

3. Mac and cheese at Joe’s Southern Table, Covent Garden and Kentish Town

There’s no better place in London to have this homey American classic than Joe’s Southern Table. Oozing with layers of melted cheese, we just want to bury ourselves in a mound of this stuff. Why not wash it down with one of their signature bourbon cocktails?

4. Poutine at Hot Mess Poutine pop-up van, various London locations

If you’ve never tried poutine before, you’re missing out! This beautiful mess of cheese curds, gravy and chips is one of the latest street food trends taking over London, and comes all the way from Canada. Perfect stodgy goodness for a chilly day.

5. Cheese toasties at Grill My Cheese, Leather Lane food market

In the search for London’s best comfort food, you can never have too much grilled cheese. Our favourite grilled cheese is served piping hot at a food stall in Leather Lane market – head there for a guaranteed lunchtime pick-me-up.

6. Salted caramel brownie at Bad Brownie, various locations

We don’t want to neglect sweet treats too in our round-up, so here’s a divine, gooey salted caramel brownie from pop-up stall Bad Brownie. They can be found at various central London street food markets on weekdays.

7. Cinnamon Bun at Nordic Bakery, Soho, Covent Garden and Marylebone

No-one knows how to do cosy like Scandinavians. The Nordic Bakery’s classic cinnamon buns are unbeatable in this respect – have them with a steaming hot cup of coffee for the perfect way to stave off the mid-afternoon hump.

8. Hot chocolate at Said dal 1923, Soho

Head to this retro cafe for a taste of authentic Italian hot chocolate that’s deliciously thick and creamy. The cakes and truffles there are also highly recommended for even more of a chocolate fix.

8. Raclette at Androuet

And last but not least, head to Androuet for the ultimate winter warmer: raclette. This Swiss classic is essentially mounds of shaved cheese over ham and potatoes. Read our earlier review here.
